Karon and i am guessing you will include kata as they are basically the same area have three very good beaches, karon beach, kata beach and kata noi beach.there is also a lot of restaurants and bars. Karon is more spread out (it is a much longer beach) and quite a bit lower pace than kata. The tip of kata and karon is good but a bit of a way into karon. When the moon is full the tides are big in both places, but i found the currents at karon to be way stronger, and i can't imagine you would have fun trying to avoid your little ones from getting wiped out. You have to book up early for the high season (we have already booked our hotels in patong and kata for jan / feb 2012!) kata is much smaller, and the beach is much nicer than patong.
In peak high season both beaches are crowded although i like the southern end of karon beach as the umbrellas and chairs are not as closely packed as on kata beach then. If you are a hotel guest, you can enjoy using the snorkelling reef program offered by the hotel, but if you are a visitor, there is a small road on the left of the hotel that will take you to that beach. Kata in my opinion has the better beach. Some of phukets best restaurants, some good shopping etc are all within walking distance. Most evening venues here are geared towards families and couples, including outdoor cafés and restaurants. Imo out of kata and karon, kata is great as it still has the village type appeal whilst being quite busy. Karon beach is lovely as well.
Karon beach is very well located, there are some nice beaches around as kata beach 1.3km away and kata noi 4.6km away, and from karon beach to patong beach it is only 7 km.

Hi, myself and my twin 3 1/2 old daughters are heading to thailand in mid november for a 3 week holiday. Karon beach is longer with more high rise or large hotel establishments overlooking the beach. I had the room that had the view like i wanted from the picture (there is a building under construction right next to the hotel so i didn't want to be faced. Street food is great but eat the fresh cooked food. Old phuket town is great for food especially the weekend night market do all shopping there less hassel and heaps cheaper than patong to be honest karon is cheaper than both kata and patong for shopping just have to search and seek. But still has some restaurants and massage places. Either way, you can take a taxi to patong or phuket town. Some of phukets best restaurants, some good shopping etc are all within walking distance. Over the years karon beach has become one of jonathan's favourite places to stay in phuket, as it offers a lovely quiet stretch of sandy beach, with plenty of umbrellas / sun beds available to hire. Less hectic than patong and more compact than karon, kata is the ideal compromise between the 2. You could easily find things to do (food, night life, etc.) at either, but you will find more 'activity' in kata and more 'quiet' in karon. Located about 20 minutes south of the gaudy gomorrah that is patong town, karon is less expensive than surin beach, less crowded than patong beach, and just a bit better looking than nearby kata beach. Of course either spot will be less chaotic than patong which you could taxi to if you need some of that. The beach there is long and gets quite quiet especially on the north end.
